In fact, it is made entirely of glazed porcelain skilfully fabricated to resemble the forms and surfaces of these other materials. The sculpture is important historically because it was included in a seminal exhibition of work by Richard Shaw and Robert Hudson at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1973. Simply entitled Ceramics, the show represented a key breakthrough for West Coast ceramics, representing a crossover between craft and sculpture. Among the other objects in the 1973 exhibition was the much-reproduced S on a Pillow, which shares Cup's seemingly precarious stacked construction. Both works exemplify Shaw's engagement with the proto-postmodernist bricolage aesthetic that was then much in the air.","physicalDescription":"Sculpture, of cast and assembled porcelain, with coloured matt glazes, in the form of a small white globular vessel the neck of which is of inverted conical shape. This vessel or 'cup' is balanced on a tripod of trompe l'oeil branches which are themselves positioned on a trompe l'oeil rock. A further single trompe l'oeil branch and short length of string are positioned to one side on the rock. The sculpture is slip-cast in porcelain in sections, using found objects to create moulds, and subsequently assembled. The string is extruded. The work is decorated with gloss glaze inside the cup, and matt oxide-stained glazes elsewhere, the branches greenish, the rock brown.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Richard Shaw","id":"A39057"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"cast","id":"x32615"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain, cast and assembled, with coloured matt glazes","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Studio Pottery","id":"THES48889"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2011EW6676","2011EW6674"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"141S","id":"THES49869"},"free":"","case":"25","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"sculpture","id":"AAT47090"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"California","id":"x28779"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1972","earliest":"1972-01-01","latest":"1972-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"31.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"15","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Unmarked","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Regarding the title of the work and its history, Shannon Trimble, Director of the Braunstein / Quay Gallery, stated:\n\n\"In the 1973 catalog published by the San Francisco Museum of Art (later to become the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) - Robert Hudson/Richard Shaw Work in Porcelain - the work appears on page 18 and is simply listed as \"Cup\", but there are a number of cups in the catalogue and over the years people have taken to calling it the Cup on a Rock to differentiate it from other works from this period.
