It represents the Battle of El-Teb, which took place on the 29th February 1884 in the Sudan between Britsh infantry, commanded by Sir Gerald Graham, and the Mahdist forces, led by Osman Digma. It is one of a number of representations of specific historical battles manufactured by Heinrichsen, who were one of the foremost producers of this type of lead soldiers, known as lead 'flats' because of their flat shape. They have been made by pouring molten lead into moulds, and allowing to cool before being individually hand-painted.","physicalDescription":"Set of 140 flat lead figures and scenery, hand-painted, in original wooden box with lid.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Heinrichsen","id":"A38960"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lead, moulded and hand-painted and wood, sawn, bent and glued","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2025PF5985","2025PF5986","2013GG7596","2013GG7606"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES343658"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES343658"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES343658"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"soldiers","id":"AAT185678"}],[{"text":"box base","id":""}],[{"text":"box lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1890","earliest":"1885-01-01","latest":"1894-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Depth","value":"21","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Approximate layout size","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Approximate layout size","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"43","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Approximate layout size","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This set of lead soldiers was produced in the late 19th century by the German manufacturer Heinrichsen, based in Nuremberg.","historicalContext":"The set would have been played with by children, but also collected by adults.
