Furniture rests seem to have been made in sets and were used during the late 18th and 19th centuries, to raise and protect wooden furniture from damp and damage in a domestic environment. These rests are often referred to incorrectly as 'window rests'. They were thought to have been used to hold open sash windows, however the shapes and wear on these rests clearly indicate use under furniture legs. The female portrait is possibly that of Princess Charlotte or Shakespeare's Juliet.","physicalDescription":"Furniture rest, earthenware, with polychrome glazed decoration, incised on top of base to provide a non-slip surface, relief decoration on the front depicting a female head with cherub above, it has a red background with dark yellow border, there is a foliage mould border around the platform in green and golden brown, the female is in a red top, her face is peach and she has brown hair, the cherub is peach with blue and dark yellow.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"glaze","id":"AAT15092"}],"techniques":[{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"},{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Earthenware, painted and glazed","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2012FJ5255"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"30","shelf":"2","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Furniture rest","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"ca. 1820","earliest":"1815-01-01","latest":"1824-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"7.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"8.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"11","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Furniture rest, earthenware, with relief decoration depicting a female head, with cherub above, possibly of Princess Charlotte or Shakespeare's Juliet, made in England, 19th century, ca. 1820","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Garland, P. \"Ceramic Furniture Rests\", 2011, p36-37"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Garland, P., \"Ceramic Furniture Rests\", 2011, p.58-60"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Garland, Peter, \"Ceramic Furniture Rests\", Garland / Synergie Group, 2011."}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Princess Charlotte","id":"N1761"},{"text":"Juliet","id":"N1318"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.24-2011"],"accessionNumberNum":"24","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2011,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-16","recordCreationDate":"2011-04-06","availableToBook":false}}
