It is an anonymous ‘in-between’ place, and a structure of no particular significance. The image is undeniably melancholy, and narrates a space which is defined by absence rather than presence. The title is probably a reference to the American writer Richard Brautigan (1935-1984), and may be inspired by Brautigan's poem <i>All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace</i>.\r\n\r\nAndrew Curtis is a printmaker and a book artist. He graduated from Winchester School of Art in 2002 and works as a lithographer at The Curwen Studio in Cambridge. He won the  Birgit Skiold Memorial Trust Award for work on paper, in 2005.\r\n\r\nIn terms of style and subject, this print is belongs to the British landscape tradition. It is an interesting example of a younger artist using lithography, a traditional printmaking technique.","physicalDescription":"Black and white print showing a dilapitated rollercoaster","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Curtis, Andrew","id":"A16960"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2014HG0228"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2004","earliest":"2004-01-01","latest":"2004-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased through the Julie and Robert Breckman Print Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"27","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"34","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Richard Braughtigan', lithograph by Andrew Curtis, British, 2004","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"roller coasters","id":"AAT7319"},{"text":"amusement parks","id":"AAT512"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.575-2005"],"accessionNumberNum":"575","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2005,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"1/7","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"2005-12-06","availableToBook":false}}
