The grotesque style often featured fanciful creatures -part human, part plant. The prints of Cornelis Floris have been described as having a sinister quality about them. In this example the combination of the auricular (ear-like) quality of the framework and the presence of individual figures apparently held prisoner by it, does give an unsettling effect.","physicalDescription":"Etching","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Floris, Cornelis (II)","id":"A8394"},"association":{"text":"printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Cock, Hieronymus","id":"A8256"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Etching","id":"AAT53241"},{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Etching on laid paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[{"text":"Mannerist","id":"AAT21144"},{"text":"Renaissance","id":"AAT21140"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2009CB6709"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"62","id":"THES49739"},"free":"","case":"CA15","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Antwerp","id":"x28724"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1556","earliest":"1556-01-01","latest":"1556-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"30.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"size of plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"20.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"size of plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"32.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"size of sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"size of sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"F","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Other plates from the same set in the V&A are lettered A to I and K to M."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Etching by Cornelis Floris II, published by Hieronymus Cock.
