After working for various companies, he formed his own, Nicole, Ltd., in Tokyo in 1971. He introduced a menswear line in 1974 and opened boutiques in New York and Hong Kong in the late 1970s and early 1980s.\r\n\r\nMatsuda's wardrobe offers a basic canon of separate elements. There components are never dull. Their versatility comes from simple silhouettes combined with unexpected fabrics and finishing details. This ensemble illustrates Matsuda's playful experimentation in textiles, stitching together various patterns to construct a well-tailored suit. In particular, the sea-themed silk tie pops with its detailed mermaids against the rich woollen plaid of the coat.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Matsuda, Mitsuhiro","id":"A19473"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Matsuda","id":"A19079"},"association":{"text":"brand name","id":"x30588"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"},{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Tailoring","id":"THES287146"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2020MT1517","2020MT1544"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES306213"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES306213"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"011","id":"THES306213"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"shirt","id":"AAT212499"}],[{"text":"trousers","id":"AAT209935"}],[{"text":"coat","id":"AAT46143"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Japan","id":"x29399"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1992","earliest":"1992-01-01","latest":"1992-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mark Reed","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Suit, tan trousers, navy blue coat and white shirt, Matsuda, Japan, 1992.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.11:3-2011","T.11:2-2011","T.11:1-2011"],"accessionNumberNum":"11","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2011,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Shirt","Trousers","Coat"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2011-02-25","availableToBook":true}}
