'Grotesque' derives from the Italian word <i>grottesco</i>. The style was inspired by ancient Roman designs discovered at the end of the 15th century in the underground rooms, or grottoes, of the Golden House of Emperor Nero in Rome. \r\n\r\nGrotesque ornament was used to decorate a wide range of objects, such as ceramics, and the style was much copied by Renaissance artists.\r\n\r\nA variety of motifs, such as flower and ornament, animal heads and sphinx surround the infant Bacchus, the god of wine. Below him is Ceres, the goddess of agriculture. She is recognisable by her emblems, the cornucopia and ears of corn. Together, Ceres and Bacchus suggest the idea of plenty.","physicalDescription":"Engraving","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Massys, Cornelis","id":"A17705"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Cornelis Massys","id":"A17705"},"association":{"text":"Printmaker","id":"AAT25164"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT53225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Ornament prints","id":"THES49038"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2011FB6887","2006BK8766"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EO","shelf":"31","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Netherlands","id":"x29020"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"},{"place":{"text":"Antwerp","id":"x28724"},"association":{"text":"Printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1540","earliest":"1535-01-01","latest":"1544-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"date":{"text":"1548","earliest":"1548-01-01","latest":"1548-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"20.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"To plate mark","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"To plate mark","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"11.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Cut to ","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Cut to ","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"There is a copy in reverse published by Ducerceau in 1550, an impression of which is in the V&A, inventory number 23089.23.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Cornelis Massys.
