The decoration is of silver and gold yusen enamels depicting birds and flowers (including a flowering magnolia) on a mirror-black ground. While the composition is a little stiff and formal, the use of space is sensitive and the enamels have been applied with great skill. The area immediately below the rim has a delicate border of cicada-wing lappets, while the neck is decorated with geometric diaper panels and the shoulders with alternating butterflies and flowers on a brown enamel ground. The area above the foot has a band of stylised silver yusen flowers within formal panels. The gilded inner base has an applied silver plaque with the engraved four-character mark Kyoto Namikawa. The birds on the vase are probably the Siberian Blue Robin (Erithacus cyane), a common summer visitor to Japan.","physicalDescription":"Cloisonné enamel vase decorated with birds, flowers, butteflies and geometric patterns bearing the mark of Namikawa Yasuyuki.
