There is a silver yusen and shosen enamel design of Chinese Spinach (Amaranthus Tricolour; Hageito in Japanese), a plant grown specifically for its decorative variegated foliage. The subtle variations in the colour of the leaves have been recreated by the careful use of hues of red, green and yellow enamels. The almost three-dimensional quality of the leaves is testament to the remarkable technical skills of the enameller. The vase has a pale grey-green enamel and the base plate carries the silver yusen mark of the Ando Company on a dark brown enamel base; this colour has also been used for the counter-enamel. For a pair of vases (with Imperial Crests) by the Ando Company which are decorated with a similar plant see Meiji no Takara no. 53 or Japanese Imperial Craftsmen, no. 99.","physicalDescription":"Cloisonné enamel vase with a decorative plant design.
