In Northern Europe, the woods of fruit trees, such as pear, plum and cherry, were used because of their rich colours and as cheap substitute hardwoods for timbers from the Indies. This box is decorated in the vernacular style with popular themes ranging from hunting and duelling to a nude female figure on the lid holding an anchor like a phallic symbol. It was probably intended as a more rustic lover's gift.","physicalDescription":"Pearwood box carved in relief. Rectangular form. The sliding lid carved in high relief at the further end with a formal rosette and at the other end with a nude recumbent female figure bearing in front an anchor (phallic); Other end plan. On the left hand side a hunstman with lance and bugle horn pursuing a deer and two young through woodland.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pearwood","id":"x34734"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved pearwood","categories":[{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"},{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Medieval and renaissance","id":"THES271264"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AE5982"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"020","id":"THES302035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"020","id":"THES302035"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Box","id":""}],[{"text":"Lid","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Denmark","id":"x28806"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1600","earliest":"1595-01-01","latest":"1604-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs E.
