Created from a sheet of woven  polyethylene it bears a complex pattern  created with a stencil burner. The sheet is suspended from a  strip of plexiglass a metre in front of a blank wall, and light is shone through it, creating a very beautiful effect: the complexity of the pattern is increased by the negative version that appears on the wall behind. The design reflects the rich traditions of the Islamic world, but also the violence to which it has been subjected both by its own inhabitants and outsiders.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Woven polythene decorated with a complex cut out pattern of geometric and floral shapes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Amighi, Afruz","id":"A37972"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"polythene","id":"AAT14482"}],"techniques":[{"text":"stencilling","id":"AAT53433"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Polythene with hand-cut design made using a stencil burner","categories":[{"text":"Islam","id":"THES48932"},{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2009CD4051","2009CD4066","2009CD4056","2009CD4055"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES325802"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"hanging","id":"AAT205010"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2008","earliest":"2008-01-01","latest":"2008-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"317.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"208.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Hanging, woven polythene and plexiglass, <i>1001 Pages</i>, Afruz Amighi, New York, 2008.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"stars","id":"AAT9811"},{"text":"leaves","id":"x34654"},{"text":"flowers","id":"x35571"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["ME.1-2010"],"accessionNumberNum":"1","accessionNumberPrefix":"ME","accessionYear":2010,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-07-18","recordCreationDate":"2011-02-01","availableToBook":true}}
