The style was heavily influenced by fashionable Italian grotesque ornament that derived from Ancient Roman remains and became known as the \"Ecole de Fontainebleau\" in France. It was spread by engravers like Jacques Androuet du Cerçeau, Cornelis Bos and Hugues Sambin, and practiced by French, Italian and Flemish craftsmen. Grotesque masks sprouting vegitation were a very popular motif that appeared in all media ranging from woodwork (like this example) to painted ceilings and printed books.","physicalDescription":"Panel of Oak, carved in relief with a mask in the centre from the mouth of which issue two floral scrolls.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oak","id":"AAT12264"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved oak","categories":[{"text":"Woodwork","id":"THES48877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"FWK","id":"THES48597"},"images":["2006AE6094","2017KE2753"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES343496"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figurative panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1560","earliest":"1555-01-01","latest":"1564-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"70.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"35.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Thickness","value":"3.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"When acquired by the museum in 1895, the measurements were as follows: L. 2 ft 3 3/4 ins; W. 1ft 2 ins","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This object was purchased by the Museum for £4 form M.
