It represents an example of the 'cute picaninny', an enduring comic racial stereotype in popular culture which caricatured African American children (especially from the rural southern states). Typified by the character of Topsy in Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (though the term was already in use), it persisted well into the 1960s when it was challenged by civil rights groups and the growing self-confidence of Black consumers. By the end of the decade the term was widely regarded as derogatory and offensive. More recently, a collectors' market has grown up in 'Black Americana' for nostalgic or ironic consumption or as material evidence in the study of Black history.","physicalDescription":"Folder card (portrait format). On the front: cartoon image of a Black child with heart-shaped lips and \"googly eyes\" (trade term for plastic eyes that move when shaken) and the words \"Is yo'all lookin' for a valentine?\", printed in black, red, blue and yellow. Inside: the words \"Ah's available!\" printed in red, signed in pencil \"Charlie\". On the back: publisher's logo and product details printed in black.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Barker","id":"C8351"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plastic","id":"AAT14570"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screenprint","id":"x36290"},{"text":"letterpress","id":"AAT178926"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screenprint, letterpress and plastic \"googly eyes\" on paper","categories":[{"text":"African Diaspora","id":"THES48873"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Caricatures & Cartoons","id":"THES48983"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Greeting cards","id":"THES48944"},{"text":"Romance","id":"THES253023"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2011EN6467","2011EN6466","2011EN6465"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"GG","shelf":"67","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"greetings card","id":"AAT26778"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"Yes-general","note":"Racist depiction/stereotype"}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1950","earliest":"1950-01-01","latest":"1950-12-31"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Tim Travis","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"15.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"12.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"folded","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"25.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"open","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'IS YO'ALL LOOKIN' FOR / A VALENTINE?'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On the front, lettered within the design in yellow and white"},{"content":"'AH'S / AVAILABLE / !'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inside, lettered in red"},{"content":"'Charlie'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Inside, handwritten in pencil"},{"content":"'A BARKER CARD / 25-V409 / Copyright MCML / BARKER, Cincinnati, U.
