Mabb's interest in Morris focuses not only on the design of his patterns but also the inherent contradictions between Morris's political beliefs - he was a campaigning Socialist - and his practice as a designer and business-man - he made his living creating luxury goods that were affordable only by the upper middle-classes. \r\n\r\nIn this print Mabb contrasts the political philosophies and design practices of two artists who held Socialist views and produced designs intended to enhance the lives of the labouring classes. Each used pattern design as a medium to promote different forms of socialism and utopian enterprise. Morris's designs were hand-printed (and thus labour-intensive and costly), and his patterns were invariably flower and foliage designs suggestive of a nostalgia for rural life; Liubov Popova (1889-1924) was a member of the Russian Constructivist group of artists who promoted a radical socialism and produced a number of textile designs which were to be machine-printed (and therefore cheap), with simple abstract motifs. Mabb unites the craft aesthetic of Morris with the machine aesthetic of Popova.","physicalDescription":"A sample of William Morris 'Vine' wallpaper (a modern reprint) overprinted with a repeated red and black striped/geometric motif.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mabb, David","id":"A19472"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screenprint on wallpaper","categories":[{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2011EW4920"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"33","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2010","earliest":"2010-01-01","latest":"2010-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"70","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"52","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"David Mabb 98/100","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signature; edition number; both in black ink, lower right hand corner."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"David Mabb, Liubov Popova Untitled Textile Design on William Morris Wallpaper for HM 2010.
