It remains particularly close to its regional, peasant, origins and is one of the five key Polish National Dances of which the other four are the 'Polonez', the 'Krakowiak', the 'Mazur' and the 'Kujawiak'.\r\n\r\nA version of the ‘Oberek’ known as the Oberek Opoczynski appears to have been choreographed by Dr. Morley Leyton who founded and directed the American based group the Janosik Polish Dancers in 1971. This company have worked closely with the Polish State Folk Dance and Song Ensemble, Mazowsze. The Mazowsze company was established by a decree issued by the Polilsh Ministry of Culture and Art on the 8th of November 1948. The decree ordered Professor Tadeusz Sygietynski to create a folk group that would maintain regional artistic traditions and the traditional folk repertoire of songs and dances of the Masovian countryside. The group was intended to protect this folk tradition from destruction and encapsulate its diversity, beauty and richness. Mazowsze staged its premiere performance of regional songs and dances in the Polish Theatre in Warsaw on the 6th of November 1950.","physicalDescription":"Rough Sketch in pencil on cream paper, the right edge of which appears to have been burnt at some stage in the sketch's past. It shows two dancers from the Polish Dance Company performing the Oberek Opoczynski. Swirling lines and shading have been used to show two dancers in the midst of a dance. They appear to be dressed in traditional Polish costume, one female is positioned on the left, whilst her male partner stands on her right.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Topolski, Feliks","id":"A5964"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2011ET5155"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES356686"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}],[{"text":"sketches","id":"AAT15617"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Poland","id":"x29083"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"circa 1950","earliest":"1945-01-01","latest":"1954-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"24.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"36","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Measurement taken at widest point as edges are uneven","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Oberek Opoczynski'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Handwritten annotation in biro at the base of the sketch"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Pencil sketch by Feliks Topolski showing two dancers from the Polish Dance Company performing the Oberek Opoczynski, undated.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":["Mazowsze"],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.135-1979"],"accessionNumberNum":"135","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":1979,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Creator's reference no.","id":"THES58055"},"number":"69A"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2010-12-24","availableToBook":true}}
