They emerged from the Unit 10 course taught at the Architectural Association in the 1970s by Bernard Schumi, and later by Nigel Coates. Their activities were expressed through drawings, exhibitions, and publications which included a magazine. They were fascinated by the chaotic elements of contemporary culture, and drew heavily on music, club culture, clothing and filmmaking. Fascinated by the process of post-industrial urban decay, and its relationship to historical ideas of identity, Britain was given the identity of ‘Albion’. This had close affinities with the work of Derek Jarman, and this drawing relates to an unrealised retreat designed for him.","physicalDescription":"Design, in pastel and acrylic paint on tracing paper, with a bust of Derek Jarman in the foreground, a rendering of a house with an adjacent circular paddock behind, and cliffs and sea in the background.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Coates, Nigel","id":"C3001"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pastel","id":"x32662"},{"text":"acrylic paint","id":"AAT15058"},{"text":"tracing paper","id":"AAT14161"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pastel and acrylic paint on tracing paper","categories":[{"text":"Gender and Sexuality","id":"THES48940"}],"styles":[{"text":"post-modern","id":"AAT22208"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2011EN2181"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"66","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1984","earliest":"1984-01-01","latest":"1984-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.1497-2010","id":"O1176731"},"association":"Series"}],"creditLine":"Given by the artist","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"140","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"82.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design, for Derek Jarman's Ideal Home project, pastel and acrylic paint on tracing paper, Nigel Coates, 1984","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Jarman, Derek","id":"N1361"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.1496-2010"],"accessionNumberNum":"1496","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2010,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2010-12-22","availableToBook":false}}
