Both worked for the Russian Imperial Ballet. Nicolai became an important teacher and after leaving the Imperial Ballet in 1914 went on to teach dance in Russia, Paris and London, where he eventually settled. Sergei, regarded as the greater choreographer and perceived as the natural successor to Pavel Gerdt as the Imperial Ballet's Premier danseur noble, died by suicide, aged 30. \r\n\r\nThe brothers worked together to produce caricatures of fellow dancers, choreographers and musicians at the Russian Imperial Ballet. Anna Johansson (1860-1917) was a celebrated soloist of the St. Petersburg Imperial Ballet, daughter of choreographer and coaching balletmaster, Christian Johansson. She had excellent technique but lacked personality on stage, making her an excellent dancer of variations such as the Shades in La Bayadere and the Diamond variation in The Sleeping Beauty. She became an important teacher at the Imperial Ballet School.","physicalDescription":"Caricature of A. Johanson by Nicolai and Sergei Legat. She is shown in the ballet fifth position on pointe.
