The distinctive wave pattern was developed by Victoria Rutter during the course of her professional career, continuing a long tradition of design innovation among the professional quilting community. \r\n\r\nThe printed linen used for the quilt top is part of a series designed by Timorous Beasties. Founded in Glasgow in 1990 by Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons, the design studio experiments with both hand printing and machine production using textiles as the unsuspecting vehicle for uncompromisingly contemporary scenes. At first glance these appear to mirror the provincial scenes portrayed in eighteenth century toile-de-jouy textiles, but closer inspection reveals a nightmarish vision of modernity, where the homeless and dispossessed are depicted against a landscape of tower blocks and graveyards.","physicalDescription":"Quilted bedcover of hand printed linen. The linen is printed by the Timorous Beasties design studio using a technique similar to block printing. The print used for the quilt top is entitled 'Glasgow Toile' and depicts images of the dispossessed against the Glasgow skyline. The quilt is hand quilted in cotton thread in a twisted wave design.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Victoria Rutter","id":"AUTH315239"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"The fabric 'Glasgow Toile' was designed by Timorous Beasties"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Louis Moreau","id":"A36245"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x40048"},"note":"The fabric 'Glasgow Toile' was designed by Timorous Beasties"},{"name":{"text":"Louis Moreau Workshop","id":"A36245"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen","id":"x29412"},{"text":"cotton thread","id":"x34841"}],"techniques":[{"text":"quilted","id":"AAT53656"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand quilted linen","categories":[{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2013GU6969","2017JY9302","2017JY9307","2017JY9313","2017JY9314","2017JY9315","2017JY9316","2017JY9321","2017JY9322","2017JY9330"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES325770"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"quilts","id":"AAT197990"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":"The fabric 'Glasgow Toile' was designed and made by the Glasgow based design team Timorous Beasties"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2010","earliest":"2010-01-01","latest":"2010-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":"The fabric 'Glasgow Toile' was produced to order in Glasgow in 2009"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"2410","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/06/2017","earliest":"2017-06-08","latest":"2017-06-08"},"part":"Top edge","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"2410","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/06/2017","earliest":"2017-06-08","latest":"2017-06-08"},"part":"Bottom edge, before curves","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"2270","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/06/2017","earliest":"2017-06-08","latest":"2017-06-08"},"part":"Proper right edge, before curve","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"2270","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/06/2017","earliest":"2017-06-08","latest":"2017-06-08"},"part":"Proper left edge, before curve","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"17","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"08/06/2017","earliest":"2017-06-08","latest":"2017-06-08"},"part":"Total weight; weight of roller and pole only 12kg","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Weight excluding roller","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Commissioned for the V&A exhibition Quilts 1700-2010 (20 March - 4 July 2010)","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Quilt, hand printed linen, 'North and South', designed by Victoria Rutter, made by Louis Moreau Workshop, Britain, 2010.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"Sue Prichard (ed.), <i>Quilts, 1700-2010 : hidden histories, untold stories</i>, London: V&A, 2010","id":"AUTH354377"},"details":"no. 60","free":""}],"production":"Louis Moreau is a north London workshop that creates bespoke quilts to order and employs women from the London area.
