Sam Nujoma ( born 1929), a railway worker, became head of the Owamboland Peoples Organisation, a forerunner to SWAPO, before being exiled and jailed for six years, returning to Namibia in 1966 to lead SWAPO and bring the country to independence in 1990. He was democratically elected President in the same year and retired from office in 2004. The photographer, George Hallett, came to Europe in 1970 where he met up with other South African exiles, such as Gavin Jantjes, who made many posters and screenprints protesting the horrors of Apartheid.","physicalDescription":"Poster with photographic image of Sam Nujoma in military garb; below this, a calendar for the months of January and February.
