This was for the programme marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the death of Serge Diaghilev. Fonteyn was coached in the role by it’s creator Tamara Karsavina and in the programme she acknowledged Karsavina’s help. In her autobiography Fonteyn noted that ‘Karsavina’s words in rehearsal were pure gold. Fokine had told her, “Forget your graces. The Firebird is powerful, hard to manage, rebellious.”’ Karsavina also warned Fonteyn ‘This is the most tiring ballet you will ever dance.’ \n\nThe overall production of Mikhail Fokine’s choreography was by Serge Grigoriev (Diaghilev’s regisseur) and his wife Lubov Tchernicheva (who had frequently danced as the Tsarevna). Natalia Goncharova again designed the production. The Sadler’s Wells’ production of the <i>Firebird</i> moved to Covent Garden, London, opening on 31 August 1954 where the Tatler noted ‘Margot Fonteyn’s flashing brilliance…held a full Covent Garden audience enthralled.’\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Satin pointe shoe with ribbons attached","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"satin","id":"AAT132902"}],"techniques":[{"text":"shoe-making","id":"x40339"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Satin, hessian, card, glue, leather, ribbons","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Footwear","id":"THES48951"},{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"},{"text":"Theatre costume","id":"THES268477"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2016JG4670"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES343703"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Shoe","id":""}],[{"text":"ballet shoes","id":"AAT46085"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Ann Todd","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Associated production: Wearer and dancer: Margot Fonteyn.
