Winter Games is a sports video game based on sports featured in the Winter Olympic Games. It was developed by Epyx and released in Europe by U.S. Gold. The game was presented as a virtual multi-sport carnival called the \"Epyx Winter Games\" with up to 8 players each choosing a country to represent, and then taking turns competing in various events to try for a medal. The game allowed players to either compete in all of the events sequentially, choose a few events, choose just one event, or practice an event. The game was published by Epyx, a video games developer and publisher in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. The company was founded as Automated Simulations by Jim Connelley and Jon Freeman, originally using Epyx as a brand name for action-oriented games before renaming the company to match in 1983. Epyx published a long series of \"hits\" through the 1980s, but nevertheless went bankrupt in 1989 before finally disappearing in 1993.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Epyx","id":"A36162"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Games","id":"THES48947"},{"text":"Type: computer games\nSubject: naval","id":""},{"text":"Digital play","id":"THES274367"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":["2010ED1766","2010ED0993"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343656"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343656"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343656"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343656"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343656"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"boxes (containers)","id":"AAT45643"}],[{"text":"leaflets","id":"AAT211825"}],[{"text":"computer game","id":""}],[{"text":"manuals","id":"AAT26395"}],[{"text":"computer game","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"San Francisco","id":"x32036"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1986","earliest":"1986-01-01","latest":"1986-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Samantha Lawson and Simon Linzell","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Played with by brother and sister, Thomas (b. 30/11/1974) and Samantha (b. 08/01/1978) Lawson who lived in Walderslade near Chatham, Kent.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Computer game, Winter Games, made in the United States by Epyx in 1986.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Mass produced","id":"THES48863"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.189:1-2010","B.189:2-2010","B.189:5-2010","B.189:3-2010","B.189:4-2010"],"accessionNumberNum":"189","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2010,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","boxes (containers)","leaflets","computer game [1]","manuals","computer game [2]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-03","recordCreationDate":"2010-10-05","availableToBook":false}}
