Burton in His Original Transformation Dance","type":"published title"}],"summaryDescription":"Mr. C. Burton's extremely well-advertised 'Transformation Dance' at St. George's Hall, Scarborough, appears to have comprised a number of dances in different costumes into which he changed, or possibly 'transformed' at lightning speed. The images show him dancing as (clockwise from top right, ) a Welsh woman; a Turkish man; a 'broom girl'; a Neapolitan man with castanets; a Frenchman carrying the French flag and the union jack; a Chinese man; a pipe-smoking Irish woman; a Scottish man doing a reel; an 'African Sal', and centre, perhaps, a Greek man. The central image depicting Mr. Burton 'en pointe' shows that men performed this technique in the 19th century as well as women.\n\nThe possible references in the images to African Sal, who danced in Pierce Egan's <i>Life in London</i> at Sadler's Wells Theatre in 1822, and the broom girl, made famous by Madam Vestris (1797-1856) at London's Haymarket Theatre in 1826, would date this poster to around 1830, but Mr Burton could not have dancd at Scarborough's St. George's Hall until it was built in 1858. It operated as a music hall until 1880, with only its façade extant today. Mr. Burton may have had this poster printed to advertise his act for some time, with the central top roundel blank to overprint venue names, or his act was testament to the lasting popularity of African Sal and Madam Vestris.","physicalDescription":"Pictorial. The poster is printed with a red background, within which there are ten roundels with white backgrounds, the central one arched. In each roundel is a woodcut image of Mr Burton, printed in black, depicting him in various dance positions in ten different costumes. In one he is dressed as a Chinese man, in another he is dressed in a kilt and sporran, and in four of them he is dressed as a woman.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"woodcut","id":"AAT53296"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printing ink and paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"},{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2019LJ1707"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES345176"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Scarborough","id":"x34468"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":"Although there is no printer's name or address on this poster, it may have produced in Scarborough, if it was specially printed for St. George's Hall.
