Trewey' featured on this bill was the versatile French performer Félicien Trewey, born in Angouême Félicien-François Trevey (1848-1920). He was a magician, mime, comedian, tightrope walker, musician, 'chapeaugraphist' and shadow artist. His 'chapeaugraphy' involved shaping a piece of felt into varous shapes to represent the headgear of characters whose expressions he mimicked. He was one of the most popular performers in Paris in the late 19th century and made several appearances at London music halls including the Canterbury in 1887 and the Alhambra in 1888, billed as 'Mons. Trewey, the Fantasiste, Humoristique, in his Shadowgraph Entertainment'. He is best known today for having introduced the Cinématographe-Lumière into Britain in 1896.\n\n<i>The Devil Bird </i>was a one-act musical sketch that Millie Howes, one of its performers, bought from its author Frederick Bowyer in September 1886.
