He moved to Paris in 1910 where he changed his name to avoid family disapproval of his chosen career. He worked for the fashion designer Paul Poiret from 1913 to 1914 and his first success as a fashion designer came from the clothing he designed for the French dancer Gaby Delys. His costumes, programme designs, and sets were featured in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1923, many productions of the Folies Bergère, Bal Tabarin, Théâtre Fémina, Le Lido and George White's Scandals.\n\nThe first director of the V&A Theatre Museum Alexander Schouvaloff knew Erté personally and realised that his wide-ranging theatrical interests and style would perfectly represent the variety of the collections for a poster advertising the museum in Covent Garden, a branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
