They all feature painted figures from the popular Chinese novel 'Water Margin', a story about brave and well-intentioned bandits who take from the rich to give to the poor. \r\n\r\nA distinct feature of the decoration is the absence of any complementary pattern in the background, as if the figures appear on a blank stage without a backdrop. A mark on the base reads 'Studio to examine one's mind'. This indicates that the dishes were specially commissioned by a man of letters.","physicalDescription":"Dish of porcelain, circular, glazed plain white and painted in the centre with 3 men, the man on the left wearing green trousers, in the colours of the famille verte.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting image making","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain painted in enamel colours","categories":[{"text":"Food vessels & Tableware","id":"THES48952"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"}],"styles":[{"text":"Kangxi","id":"AAT18482"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2010EA0837","2006AL7710","2009CT0976"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"137","id":"THES49876"},"free":"","case":"9","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dish","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Jingdezhen","id":"x32230"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1700","earliest":"1695-01-01","latest":"1704-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Salting bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"21","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Underglaze blue mark 'wen xin zhai' on base","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Mr. George Salting, accessioned in 1910.
