The American Wonder is depicted performing four separate feats of balance, all involving him performing various acts on bottles, some that support a small platform. In one image the daring equilibrist shoots a gun while standing on one leg; in another he appears to pirouette like a ballerina in a tutu, while perhaps the most precarious shows him standing on his head on a bottle, smoking a clay pipe and holding a glass of wine.\n\nIn poor areas of 19th century London such as Shoreditch, where the Standard Theatre was situated, many people would have been illiterate.
