Parker's successful play Drake, originally staged by Herbert Beerbohm Tree (1853-1917) at His Majesty's Theatre where it opened on the 3rd September 1912. The poster depicts the incident told in popular legend of the Elizabethan sea captain Sir Francis Drake playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe when he received news of the invading Spanish Armada.\n\nThe actor, publisher and politician Derwent Hall Caine was the son of the popular Victorian novellist Hall Caine, who made his stage debut in 1906 in a stage adaptation of his father's novel The Bondman. This poster is undated but since it states that the production was: 'By arrangement with Sir Herbert Tree' it would probably have been some time after the production closed at His Majesty's Theatre, before Derwent Hall Caine went to America in 1915, and certainly before Beerbohm Tree died in July 1917.","physicalDescription":"Pictorial and typographic.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Miles & Co.
