Produced by George Edwardes and directed by James T. Tanner, the musical starred Marie Tempest in the title role of Adele; Hayden Coffin as Rudolph Blair, Leonora Braham as Barbara Cripps, and Letty Lind as Daisy Vane. \n\nAfter the success of A Gaiety Girl in 1893 and The Shop Girl in 1894 at the Gaiety Theatre, by the same team of Hall, Greenbank and Jones, George Edwardes wanted his Daly's Theatre musicals to be slightly more sophisticated. The story of the opera, set in France, concerns an artist's model who becomes a widow, and her love life with an artist who at first rejects her advances, and an English nobleman to whom she becomes engaged. The opening chorus: 'With brush on hand and palette gay our varied talents we display' is reflected in the poster image by the artist Julius Mendes Price.","physicalDescription":"Pictorial and typographic poster advertising a production of An Artist's Model at the Lyric Theatre, 1895.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Price, Julius Mendes","id":"A33597"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Waterlow & Sons","id":"A9248"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"AAT25732"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"},{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Theatre","id":"THES250537"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2014GY0693"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES345209"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1895","earliest":"1890-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"S.136:437-2007","id":"O145086"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"S.146:25-2007","id":"O230923"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"49.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"poster","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"32.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"poster","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":" ","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Associated Production: An Artist's Model.
