The Grieves were a family of scene painters who worked for many London theatres during the 19th century. John Henderson Grieve (1770-1845) was principally associated with Covent Garden. His sons Thomas (1799-1882) and William (1800-1844) started at Covent Garden but went on to work for other managements. Thomas was later assisted by his son Thomas Walford (1841-1899). Together they developed the art of scene painting, evolving from the romantic to the realistic. The 'book of words' for this pantomime notes that Thomas Grieve was assisted by Messrs. Dayes, Gray, Yarnold, Jones and T.W. Grieve - his son.\n\nThe Butterfly Haunt scene opened with: 'a quantity of butterflies discovered, flying about'. The butterflies were dancers who performed the 'Grand Pas de Papillons'. The cast of the pantomime was listed as Mr. Lingham as the Hobgoblin, Miss Craven as Papillion the Fairy, Mr. E. Danvers as Prince Ugolino, Mr. Naylor as Grimguffin, Mr. W.H. Payne as the Baron Pumpolino, Mr. F. Payne as Pedro, Mlles. Parkini and Douglasoni as Thisbe and Clothilde the Ugly Sisters, Miss Clara Danvil as Cinderella, M. Dixon as Squaretoso, Mr Blowhard as the Herald (playing a trumpet solo), Mr. Fred Payne as Harlequin, Mlle Esther as Columbine, Mr. Harry Payne as the Clown and Mr. Paul Herring as Pantaloon. Frederick (1841-1880) and Harry Payne (1833-1895), the Payne Brothers, were the chief pantomimists at Covent Garden by this date, known for playing Harlequin and Clown respectively.
