He first appeared in music hall in 1898 at the Alhambra, Sandgate. He often wore a dressing gown and motoring cap, and sang comic songs including ‘She Cost Me Seven and Sixpence’ and ‘I’ve Only Come Down for the Day’. He was frequently billed as ‘The Immobile One’ because of his trick of standing still on stage with a lugubrious expression on his face while singing the songs.\n\nMayo went on to tour with his own revues, and appear in variety and pantomime. A review of his act heading the variety bill at the Theatre Royal, Aldershot, in June 1931 called him: 'The inimitable Sam Mayo, one of England's best-known comedians and humorists' [sic], adding: 'Part of Sam's charm is his pained expression while he sings the most funny songs, playing his own accompaniments on a grand piano.'","physicalDescription":"Typographic poster with blue and red lettering advertising a revue","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"John Waddington Ltd.","id":"A4538"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"x31107"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printing ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Variety","id":"THES269955"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2017JT3068"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"012","id":"THES345350"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1925","earliest":"1925-01-01","latest":"1925-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"89.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"poster","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"poster","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Associated Production: Mottoes.
