Laas, advertising the fairy spectacle L'Arbre de Noel (The Christmas Tree) by A. Mortimer, Leterrier & Vanloo, directed by Paul Cleves at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin, Paris, 6 October 1880. The production featured the 'grand ballet of the Kingdom of Christmas' with music composed by Georges Jacobi (1840-1906). Sets were designed by the painter and poster artist Jules Cherét, and by Henri Robecchi, with costumes by Mares, Alfred Grévin, and Dane.\n\nThis part was probably cut from the original poster by the composer Georges Jacobi because this section illustrates the ballet of the Kingdom of Christmas, for which he composed the music. Christmas trees and holly form part of the imagery, along with a clog that children on the continent originally left out on 5th December, the eve of St. Nicholas's Day, 6th December, for St. Nicholas to fill with presents. In this poster it is filled with the word 'Success'.\n\nL'Arbre de Noel was certainly a successful and lucrative production. According to ‘Theatrical Gossip’, in the newspaper The Era 21 November 1882, p.8: ‘L’Arbre de Noel’ at the Porte St. Martin has brought into the treasury from the date of its production, the 6th October, no less a sum than 228,900f., or over £9,000.' A manuscript note in Jacobi's bound score for the music in the Jacobi Collection at the V&A's Theatre Collections indicates that Jacobi began writing the music for this ballet on 14th April 1880 and finished on the 4th September 1880, a month before it opened in Paris..","physicalDescription":"Fragment of a poster for L'Arbre de Noel; showing a theatrical scene of a woodland forest with dancers, dressed in pixie, fairy and animal costumes, with two ballerinas behind, some of them wearing bell shaped hats, in front of a huge Christmas Tree with angels on its branches playing musical instruments such as horns, flutes and harps, and singing from song books. Other angels painted on the backdrop in white costumes are flying and playing trumpets. The side of the stage curtain can be seen with curtain rope on the right, and footlights along the front, with a large box with an image of toys on the front of it. On the left in the top corner is a clog with the word success, and gold coins dropping out of it, the other curtain tassel next to it.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Laas, H.","id":"AUTH340038"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x38483"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"},{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed ink on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2006AM2340","2015HN3866"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES345301"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1880","earliest":"1880-01-01","latest":"1880-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Jacobi Collection","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"59.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"70.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This is a fragment of a poster, probably cut from the original by Georges Jacobi (1840-1906) who composed the ballet music for L'Arbre de Noel, and in whose collection at the Theatre & Performance Department, V&A, there are other fragments of posters relating to ballets for which he composed the music.\n\nThe Carvavalet Museum, Paris, holds an example of the whole poster which measures 107 x76cms; reference AFF148.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Central section of a poster advertising L'Arbre de Noel, fairy spectacle by A.
