It was initially conceived as a comic opera, but was rejected as such in 1772 by the Comédie Italienne. The play as it is now known was written in 1773, but, due to the legal and political problems of the author, it was not performed until 23rd February, 1775, at the Comédie Française in the Tuileries. It is the first play in a trilogy of which the other parts are <i>The Marriage of Figaro</i> and <i>The Guilty Mother</i>.\r\n\r\nThis design appears to be part of a series of prints published by Martinet, Rue du Coq, of which this example is labelled as number 99. It is part of the Harry Beard Collection.","physicalDescription":"This full length coloured engraving shows an actor dressed in a brown jacket and knee breeches, the jacket trimmed with white at the sleeve ends, wrists and centre front. His stockings and waistcoat are also white but his shoes and hat are pale blue. Blue ribbons and a blue sash complete an outfit which also includes an instrument case slung over his right shoulder. He is shown on one knee, his left hand outstretched, a pen in his right as he writes a letter balanced on his knee.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Maison Martinet","id":"A26791"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"paint","id":"AAT15029"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"}],"techniques":[{"text":"print-making","id":"AAT131119"},{"text":"engraving (incising)","id":"AAT53829"},{"text":"hand-colouring","id":"AAT133555"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Engraving","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2010EJ1291"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES356571"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"engraving","id":"AAT41379"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1850-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Harry R.
