His stencils adorn walls from London to Barcelona. He is known not only for his stencil graffiti, which often plays with recognisable imagery such as this <i>Virgin Mary</i> print. His stencils, often political, and underlined with humour, adorn walls from London to Barcelona. His most memorable stunts, or interventions, include hanging one of his own paintings at Tate Britain (which went undetected for hours) and mounting a stuffed rat at London’s Natural History Museum. Although most of his work pokes fun at royalty or religion, perhaps his most interesting work has been in the anti-war vein.","physicalDescription":"A print showing the Virgin Mary bottlefeeding Jesus in black and white, except for the bottle which is orange. The side of the bottle has the skull and crossbones, symbol for poison, on the side. The background is grey and the figures seem to drip ink towards the bottom as though the image has just been spray-painted.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Banksy","id":"A15051"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"screenprint","id":"x36290"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Screenprint on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BJ8376"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"SA","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 2004","earliest":"1999-01-01","latest":"2008-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"70","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"PICTURES ON WALLS DOT COM 23/600","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Bottom right, stamped embossed circle, 23/600 in pencil within circle"}],"objectHistory":"Displayed in the Link Corridor in Aug-Oct 2005 in the 'Street Art' display.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Virgin Mary', print by Banksy, British, ca. 2004.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Mary (Virgin Mary)","id":"N480"},{"text":"Jesus Christ","id":"N1515"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"religion (concept)","id":"x37580"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.385-2005"],"accessionNumberNum":"385","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2005,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":["2010EF3004"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2005-09-06","availableToBook":false}}
