The owner of the company was Joseph Eisenmann, he died in 1919 and left the company to his Son-in-Law Leon Rees who took Harry Stone as a business partner in 1920. Harry Stone had previously worked with J.K.Farnell of Farnell Bears fame, and together Leon and Harry formed H. G. Stone and Co. \n\r\nOne of the most well known bears that they created was the Chiltern Hugmee bear in the late 1920s. They were called Hugmee as they were stuffed with soft Kapok (with the exception of the head that was excelsior) that made them more cuddly than bears stuffed solely with excelsior. They used top quality mohair and velveteen or cotton paw pads with carded soles to the feet on many early bears. \n\r\nDuring the war the factories ceased producing bears and helped the war effort instead. But before the war and after growling and musical bears became popular. In the 1950s Chiltern produced bears with plastic noses, these were in line with new safety standards.\r\nIn 1967 the Chiltern Company became a subsidiary of Chad Valley.","physicalDescription":"Light brown mohair teddy bear with flat feet to allow it to stand. It has an inset muzzle made of short mohair. The nose detail is stitched and the eyes are made of amber plastic. The paws are covered in a hard coating. The bear is stuffed with straw. The bear has a bell or ball inside so that when the bear is shaken a tinging sound occurs, hence the name 'Ting a Ling' bear. Moveable arms, legs and head.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Chiltern Toys","id":"A10398"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"mohair","id":"AAT192989"},{"text":"cloth","id":"AAT162391"}],"techniques":[{"text":"stuffing","id":"AAT231130"},{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Mohair","categories":[{"text":"Dolls & Toys","id":"THES48967"},{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SWPREP","id":"THES276097"},"free":"","case":"SR7","shelf":"2","box":"PKG360101"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"teddy bear","id":"AAT211334"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1953","earliest":"1953-01-01","latest":"1953-12-31"},"association":{"text":"manufactured","id":"x29350"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"44","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'HEMENS' ","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Handwritten in permanent marker on the bottom of both feet "},{"content":"'.........FOR V.H., LINDEN LODGE SCHOOL, 61 PRINCES WAY, WIMBLEDON PARK, LONDON, SW19 6JB'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Printed address stamped on the bottom of both feet"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Teddy bear, light brown mohair, 'Ting a Ling' bear, made by Chiltern Toys, United Kingdom, 1953.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.147-2010"],"accessionNumberNum":"147","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2010,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-30","recordCreationDate":"2010-06-07","availableToBook":false}}
