He is shown in the act of taking snuff. \r\n\r\nBelow the image is the quote:\r\n\"Il purge, rejouit conforte le cerveau;\r\nDe toute noire humeur proptement le delivre,\r\nEt qui vit sans tabac n'est pas digne de vivre\" (Act 1, Scene 1).\r\n\r\nDom Juan or The Feast with the Statue (Dom Juan ou le Festin de pierre) is a French play by Molière (1622 – 1673), based on the legend of Don Juan. Molière's characters Dom Juan and Sganarelle are the French counterparts to the Spanish Don Juan and Catalinón, characters who would later become familiar to opera goers as Don Giovanni and Leporello. It is the last part in Molière's hypocrisy trilogy, which also includes The School for Wives and Tartuffe. It was first performed on February 15, 1665, in the Palais-Royal, with Molière playing the role of Sganarelle.\r\n\r\nThis design was created by Adrien Joly (1776-1839) and appears to be part of a series of prints published by Martinet, Rue du Coq, of which this example is labelled as number 16. It is part of the Harry Beard Collection.","physicalDescription":"This full length coloured engraving shows an actor dressed in a crimson jacket, decorated with pale green braid at the centre front.
