In the early years of the Twentieth Century his factory-produced jewellery in silver and enamel, often set with glass stones, brought the style of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the lines of Art Nouveau to the mass market. He was particularly influenced by Liberty's Cymric range of jewellery, and his work shared with them the appearance of being hand-made despite being produced mechanically. Having started out on a very small scale - a workshop where he employed two men in 1861, the company expanded steadily through the late Nineteenth Century. In 1905 it moved to a purpose-built factory in Halifax, and at its height employed in excess of 350 people.","physicalDescription":"Flexible bracelet consisting of six curving rectangular plaques with central panels of irregular blue and purple enamel; between each enamelled plaque is a geometric openwork motif also in silver. These alternating elements are attached to each other with tall, plain silver links. The final enamelled plaque, which also contains the clasp, has an additional flash of green with the blue and purple enamel.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Horner, Charles","id":"A14367"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"Enamel","id":"AAT14910"}],"techniques":[{"text":"enamelling","id":"x37485"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Enamelled silver","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[{"text":"Arts and Crafts (movement)","id":"AAT21205"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2007BR2662","2007BR2663","2006AY4267"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"28","shelf":"A","box":"6"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bracelet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Halifax","id":"x35348"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1909","earliest":"1909-01-01","latest":"1909-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bought with the assistance of the Tom and Grete Lawson Trust","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"17.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"1.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Chester hallmarks for 1909-10; 'C.H' mark for Charles Horner.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Five of the enamelled sections bear the date letter, lion passant and 'C.H' marks on the reverse, one of them also has the Chester mark.
