Allons-voici la fin de mon asreux suplice\"\r\n\r\nThe tragedy <i>Gabrielle de Vergy</i> (1777) was written by the French dramatist and actor Dormont De Belloy (Pierre-Laurent Buirette de Belloy or Dormont De Belloy (1727-1775). The play was itself inspired by two French medieval legends, <i>Le châtelain de Coucy et la dame de Fayel</i> and <i>Le Roman de la chastelaine de Vergy</i>.\r\n\r\nThe English Actress Lucia Elizabeth Bartolozzi (Stage name Madame Vestris) first acted in Paris in circa 1815 where she gained an appointment with the Italian Opera. Her greatest success was achieved however on her return to London where she became particularly known for her 'breeches' parts and in 1831, having accumulated a fortune, she became lessee of the Olympic Theatre, and began the presentation of a series of burlesques and extravaganzas—for which she made this house famous.
