There are however numerous references to actors performing under the name of 'Mr. Rousseau' including a description of a benefit performance advertised in the <i>Journal de la Basse-Normandie</i>, 18 January 1789, in which two comic operas are being performed to raise money for the actor 'Sr Rousseau'. \r\n\r\nArmide was the fifth of the seven operas that Gluck wrote for the Académie Royale de Musique in Paris. It was first performed there on 23rd September 1777. It is worth noting that Gluck's version had been inspired by an earlier version composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully, first performed in 1686 at the Palais-Royale in Paris by the Académie Royale de Musique and revived in 1687, 1703, 1713, 1714, 1724, 1746, 1747, 1761 and 1764.\r\n\r\nSet during the First Crusade, it tells the love story of the sorceress Armide and the Christian knight Renaud. At war with the Christian Crusaders, Armide ensnares her enemy Renaud with her magic spells, but at the moment she raises her dagger to kill him, she finds herself falling in love with him. She casts a spell to make him fall in love with her in return, but two of his fellow soldiers find their way to Renaud, and break her spell. Renaud is thus able to escape from Armide, who is left in enraged despair.\r\n\r\nThe print is part of the Harry Beard Collection.","physicalDescription":"A full length coloured lithograph of an actor dressed in a dark brown and silver jacket and breeches, similar in design and construction to armour.
