The sample formed part of the stock of the Fore Street Warehouse Co. Ltd. and is printed in gold 'Superior Satin Damask Tabling' and 'BD40' which probably denotes quality. There is an attached paper label marked in ink 'BD40: 58inch: b120: VY'. \r\n\r\nIt is likely that this sample was held at the Warehouse and shown to prospective customers (shops and other retail outlets). It is likely that any orders would have involved various lengths which could be cut and hemmed to requirements. \r\n\r\nLittle is known of the supply of retail textile goods in London in the late 19th century so this linen provides important information on middlemen and warehouse procedure at the time.\r\n\r\nJohn Pollock, the donor's grandfather, worked at the Fore Street Warehouse Company Ltd from 1875, eventually becoming Director. The company is listed in the 1866 Post Office Directory as trading at 104-107 Fore Street, London.","physicalDescription":"Sample of linen damask of middle, domestic quality. It has a glossy surface and shows selvedges to both sides which is the intended width (58 inches or 147.4cm) of a table cloth. The sample has been cut at the top and, unevenly, at the bottom. The design shows a central repeating design of alternating rows of magnolia flower heads and buds on a dotted ground. It has wide borders (22cm) to each side showing large scale magnolia flowers and buds.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Fore Street Warehouse Company Ltd","id":"A15348"},"association":{"text":"suppliers","id":"AAT25252"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (Material)","id":"AAT14069"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woven linen damask","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Eating","id":"THES48963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2020ML8319"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES308773"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Table cloth","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Ireland (country)","id":"x32424"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1880-1900","earliest":"1880-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mary Barnard","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"88.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"147.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Superior Satin Damask Tabling'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Printed in gold"},{"content":"'BD40'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"BD4 printed in gold, 0 in ink"},{"content":"'BD40: 58inch: b120: VY'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Ink and pencil on paper label"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Table cloth, sample of 'Superior Satin Damask Tabling', probably woven in Ireland, 1880-1900","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Probably woven in Ireland.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"flowers (plants)","id":"AAT132399"},{"text":"magnolia graniflora","id":"AAT12218"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.34-2005"],"accessionNumberNum":"34","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2005,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-06","recordCreationDate":"2005-09-02","availableToBook":true}}
