This shows the actress Madlle. Dumesnil (1712-1803) in the role of Athalie, possibly in a play of the same name. The lithographer is not named but all the lithographs appear to have been published by Robert Sayer, London (1772).\r\n\r\nMarie Françoise Dumesnil was a French actress who began her career in the provinces but was summoned to join the Comédie Française in 1737. Particularly praised for her tragic roles she became rivals with fellow tragic actress Clair Josèphe Hippolyte Leris (referred to as 'La Clairon', 1723-1803). Indeed the rivalry escalated to such a degree that in 1800 Dumesnil authorized the publication of a \"Mémoire de Marie Françoise Dumesnil, en réponse aux mémoires d'Hippolyte Clairon\". \r\nShe retired from the stage in 1776.","physicalDescription":"Printed in the centre of the page this full length lithograph shows a woman, leaning forwards, her left arm outstretched as if pushing someone away.
