It was Stravinsky's second ballet for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and used a story of traditional street puppets, the Russian equivalent of Punch and Judy, who are brought to life by a showman. The first performance was given at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, in 1911. \r\n\r\nPetrouchka was designer Alexandre Benois' most important production. His sketch for a front cloth shows the roofs and dome of the neoclassical St Isaac's Cathedral which dominates the St Petersburg skyline. The action of the ballet takes place in the nearby Admiralty Square.","physicalDescription":"Set design by Alexandre Benois for a front cloth for Mikhail Fokine's ballet, Petrouchka, Diaghilev Ballets Russes, 1911.
