They give the cotton a light and delicate appearance, which is heightened by the double neck frill and gathered sleeves. Similar garments are depicted in fashion plates of the time and in portraits by artists, particularly in the works of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). In his drawing <i>Rosina Meli, Madame Guillon Lethière, and her daughter Letizia</i>, Rosina's checked dress closely resembles the one in this example, except that she also wears a fashionable ruff.\r\n\r\nThe back of the bodice has been shortened to correspond with the fashion for high waistlines. It may also indicate that this dress was worn during pregnancy, as garments were often adapted for this period in a woman's life. Contrary to popular myth, many women remained socially active right up to the time of their delivery. High-waisted dresses like this one provided comfortable and convenient maternity wear, which also concealed early physical changes. The drawstrings at the top and bottom of the front flaps may also have been inserted for pregnancy, to accomodate a growing bust size.","physicalDescription":"Day dress of printed cotton with cotton bodice lining and under flaps.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed cotton","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2026PM8124","2026PM8123","2006BB4778","2006BB4777","2017JY9102","2017JY9101"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES307286"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES307286"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"007","id":"THES307286"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Dress","id":""}],[{"text":"Scarf","id":""}],[{"text":"Ribbon","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1814","earliest":"1809-01-01","latest":"1818-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"MA/1/H926","id":"ARC163180"},"association":"Archive record"}],"creditLine":"Given by Messrs Harrods Ltd.","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"122.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"centre back to hem","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"105","unit":"cm","qualifier":"waistband to hem","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This was part of a very large collection of items of dress and accessories which was given to the Museum by Harrods, the department store, in 1913. The collection had been formed by the artist Talbot Hughes, who wrote a book on the history of dress, illustrated with photographs of models wearing items from his collection. A large firm in America had offered to buy the collection and present it to the Metropolitan Museum, New York, but Hughes did not want it to go abroad. At the suggestion of Cecil Harcourt Smith of the V&A, Harrods bought it for £2,500 and gave it to the Museum for the 'public good'. Harrods displayed the collection for three weeks in December 1913.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Day dress of printed cotton, British, 1814","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.674-1913","T.674A-1913","T.674B-1913"],"accessionNumberNum":"674","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1913,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Dress","Scarf","Ribbon"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-02-23","recordCreationDate":"2005-08-26","availableToBook":false}}
