The design is a detail for the proposed door treatment of Selfridges department store to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. \r\n\r\nAlthough this drawing is only signed by Bawden, it is one of three for the Coronation decoration of Selfridges' exterior by Bawden and  Richard Guyatt (born La Coruña, Spain 1914; died Ham, Wiltshire, 2007) who was Professor of Graphic Arts at the same college. All three are in the collection of the V&A. The other two designs are signed by Guyatt as well. Ephemeral in nature, the drawing shows the way in which the Coronation celebrations engaged participants from a range of British design practice linking them to the commercial enterprise of Oxford Street.","physicalDescription":"Design, a frontal view of the doorway of Selfridges department store showing the decoration in this area in detail.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bawden, Edward","id":"A3108"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Guyatt, Richard","id":"A18544"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"bodycolour","id":"x34671"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"painting","id":"x30598"},{"text":"typography","id":"AAT195853"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, watercolour, and bodycolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Shopping","id":"THES48895"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2010EC7731"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"105","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1953","earliest":"1948-01-01","latest":"1957-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"62","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"86.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Edward Bawden'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signature at bottom right."},{"content":"'GOD SAVE'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Part of the saying 'God save the Queen, long may she reign'."},{"content":"'E R'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"'E R' stands for Elizabeth Regina'."}],"objectHistory":"This is a design to decorate the front of Selfridges department store to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Edward Bawden & Richard Guyatt;  Selfridges department store, Oxford Street, London, Design for the store for the 1953 Coronation, ca. 1953","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Design","id":"THES48872"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Britannia","id":"N1377"},{"text":"Neptune","id":"N224"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"coronations","id":"AAT69660"},{"text":"swan","id":"x30241"},{"text":"mermaids","id":"x30066"},{"text":"sailors","id":"x38324"},{"text":"dolphin (animal)","id":"x30140"},{"text":"crown","id":"x40442"},{"text":"department stores","id":"AAT5344"},{"text":"decoration (process)","id":"AAT56257"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.441-2010"],"accessionNumberNum":"441","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2010,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2010-04-19","availableToBook":false}}
