It is for a type of gown known as a 'Dolly Varden'. There was a fashion craze in the 1870s for this type of gown named after the character from Charles Dickens's 1839 historical novel <u>Barnaby Rudge</u> set in 1780. The 'Dolly Varden' gown was an 1870s version of the polonaise gown of the 1770s and 1780s. In addition, the pattern has numerous fashion plates on the reverse. The pattern was a gift from a mother in Lyme Regis to her daughter, a 'Miss M. Case', in Notton, Dorset on 'Saturday 16th May 1889'","physicalDescription":"A large pattern to be cut out to make a gown on one side and the other side is covered with fashion plates.\r\n\r\nPattern on one side printed in line-block with fashion plates printed in wood-engraving on the other side on paper","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Preval, E","id":"A31916"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Deschamps, E.","id":"A31917"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Carbonneau, Jean-Baptiste-Charles","id":"A31947"},"association":{"text":"printer","id":"x30811"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Preval, E","id":"A31916"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Deschamps, E.","id":"A31917"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Carbonneau, Jean-Baptiste-Charles","id":"A31947"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"wood-engraving (process)","id":"AAT53303"},{"text":"line-block","id":"x34849"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Line-block and wood-engraving, printed on paper","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Fashion plates","id":"THES48956"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Day wear","id":"THES49000"},{"text":"Evening wear","id":"THES48999"},{"text":"Hats & headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Children's clothes","id":"THES48979"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD (VA)","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"MD","shelf":"67","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}],[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"probably"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1870-1889","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1889-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"112.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"80","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'I.
