It was created during the 1912 season in Paris and was subsequently danced in London, Monaco, Buenos Aires and Berlin (in 1914). Although images of the ballet appear in the souvenir programmes for the Ballets Russes' tours of the USA it was never performed there. \n\nThis design for a young Rajah, a minor character not individually named in the programmes, shows fantastic detail in the feathered turban, pearl decoration and stylised shoes.","physicalDescription":"Costume design by Leon Bakst for the Young Rajah in Mikhail Fokine's ballet <i>Le Dieu Bleu</i>, Diaghilev Ballets Russes, 1912. Full length figure of a young man in a vivid yellow coat decorated all over with 'teardrop' motifs and edged with a broad white band trimmed with pearls. He has a turban, the front encrusted with pearls and decorated with an aigrette, and wears slippers with curled toes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bakst, Leon","id":"A5664"},"association":{"text":"costume designer","id":"AAT163428"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil, watercolour and gouache on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2006AT9406"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES356713"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"costume design","id":"AAT163423"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Europe","id":"x28842"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1911","earliest":"1911-01-01","latest":"1911-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"28.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"12/11/2014","earliest":"2014-11-12","latest":"2014-11-12"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"57","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"frame","note":"Half imperial framed size.
