It is embroidered in a repeating pattern of strawberries in shades of pink and red to represent stages of ripening. The silver-gilt thread is worked mainly in plaited braid stitch and the silks in detached button-hole stitch. Such vibrantly embellished waistcoats were a popular style in English women’s fashions of the late 16th and early 17th centuries.","physicalDescription":"Left front and side of a woman's waistcoat of fine bleached linen, embroidered with silk floss in detached buttonhole-stitch with shades of pink and green, silver and silver-gilt filé in plaited braid stitch, in a design of scrolling stems, strawberry flowers and ripening strawberries.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"},{"text":"silk thread","id":"x30127"},{"text":"metal thread","id":"x30421"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand weaving","id":"AAT53643"},{"text":"hand embroidery","id":"x30339"},{"text":"hand sewing","id":"AAT257459"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Linen, silk, silver, gold; hand-woven, hand-embroidered, hand-sewn","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2021MV9183","2021MV9184","2021MV9185","2021MV9182","2006AG5552","2006AG5551","2006AG5550","2006AG5549","2011FA1801","2017KB4850"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES404927"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Waistcoat part","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca.1615","earliest":"1610-01-01","latest":"1619-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions will be added after mounting.","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Christie, Mason & Woods in 1926, together withT.258-1926, an early 17c embroidered nightcap for a total of £65 5s.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Left front and side of a woman's embroidered linen waistcoat, ca.1615, English; silk and metal threads in a pattern of strawberries.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"John Lea Nevinson, Catalogue of English Domestic Embroidery of the Sixteenth & Seventeenth Centuries, Victoria and Albert Museum, Department of Textiles, London: HMSO, 1938,  p.78"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.259-1926"],"accessionNumberNum":"259","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1926,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-15","recordCreationDate":"2005-08-25","availableToBook":false}}
