It was based on a ballet-pantomime by Eugène Scribe. The first performance took place at the Teatro Carcano, Milan on March 6, 1831.\r\n\r\nThe Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind (1820-1887) first toured Britain in 1844 but came to London in 1847, making her debut at Her Majesty's Theatre. Here she sung in Italian) Alice in <i>Robert le diable</i> before Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This role was followed by <i>La sonnambula</i> and <i>La fille du régiment</i> and Lind's popularity was such that her portrait was reproduced on snuff boxes, matchboxes and pocket handkerchiefs along with Jenny Lind soap, scent and candle snuffers.","physicalDescription":"Section of the sheet music for <i>O!
