It was originally used as an amulet, believed to protect the wearer against the evil eye and was often worn by small children. In the mid 19th century, it began to be used in conventional jewellery.\r\n\r\nThis jewel, with intricately carved flowers and woven basket-like bracelet is a good example of the type of naturalistic jewellery popular in the mid 19th century. Coral could be carved or used in its natural form, exploiting the appeal of its spiky branches.\r\n\r\nMost coral in Europe came from the sea around Naples and nearby Torre del Greco. In the 19th century it became a fashionable souvenir, partly because people could travel more once the Napoleonic wars had ended in 1815.","physicalDescription":"Bracelet, carved coral held together with gold pins.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Coral","id":"AAT11800"},{"text":"Gold","id":"AAT11021"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved coral and gold","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2006AA0229","2006AA0201"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91 (VA)","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"19","shelf":"B","box":"4"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Bracelet","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1850","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1854-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs W.
