Most of these objects were made or collected in Thailand, with some made in China for the Thai market and smaller groups of objects from Cambodia and Myanmar (Burma). The collection spans ceramics, religious sculpture, paintings and manuscripts, and includes a handful of medieval works are of uncertain date or authenticity.\n\r\nDoris Duke (1912–1993), heiress to the Duke family fortune, began collecting Southeast Asian art in the late 1950s as part of a plan to create a ‘Thai village’ at her Hawaiian estate called Shangri La. Through her foundation, established in 1961, and with the help of agents in Bangkok, Duke assembled a large collection reflecting the region’s decorative and religious arts.
