She later  went independent and set up her own toy factory in Shropshire in 1926, Victoria Toy Works. Norah Wellings continued to make dolls until 1960, whilst also designing dolls for Chad Valley. Her dolls are unusual in that they are made of velvet / felt or velveteen. Most dolls had sideways glancing eyes as a sort of trademark. All of her dolls have a Norah Wellings label sewn onto them saying 'Made in England by Norah Wellings', these can usually be found on the foot.\r\n\r\nNorah Wellings produced many ethnic dolls which were sold on sailing ships as gifts. Her most famous dolls are her South-Sea Islander dolls. She also produced dolls during the Second World war which represented the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. Harry the Hawk was a mascot doll produced to raise funds for men serving in the Royal Air Force. This particular doll is one of her ethnic collection, complete with Norah Wellings cloth label on the foot.","physicalDescription":"Norah Wellings doll with velvet/ velveteen upper body and face, with painted on features and typical sideways glancing eyes. This doll represents a gypsy with a green, yellow and cream check patterned head scarf to match the material of the wide-legged trousers. There are no leg parts inside the trousers, although the trousers do have a big slit in the material down the outside part of each leg. The upper body  is clothed in a green velvet t-shirt and black velvet waistcoat with gold trim. Blue felt shoes are attached to the end of each leg, the right shoe has the beige Norah Wellings label attached to the bottom. There are wooden beaded anklets sewn around each ankle and six 'gold' bangles around each wrist. The doll also wears a wooden bead necklace and wooden bead and gold hoop earrings. The hair is black and tied in small buns on each side of the head over the ears. The face has discoloured slightly and has a slight greenish tinge, with brown over the eyelids.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wellings, Norah","id":"A4728"},"association":{"text":"designer and maker","id":"x34662"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Fabric","id":"THES345037"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"},{"text":"Metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Painting image making","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-made, fabric, painted wood and metal","categories":[{"text":"Children & Childhood","id":"THES48980"},{"text":"Dolls & Toys","id":"THES48967"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"YVA","id":"THES48593"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES343400"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"doll","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Shropshire","id":"x29141"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1930s","earliest":"1925-01-01","latest":"1943-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"B.103-2009","id":"O1155578"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Given by Esther Rank on behalf of Ellen Rank's family","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"52.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"28","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum, span between the two hands","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Made in England by Norah Wellings'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Cloth label on foot."}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Velveteen doll wearing traditional Gypsy attire made in England by Norah Wellings in about 1930s","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["B.102-2009"],"accessionNumberNum":"102","accessionNumberPrefix":"B","accessionYear":2009,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-02","recordCreationDate":"2010-03-02","availableToBook":false}}
